When faced with the idea of health and safety, many people would perhaps think of working at height or with large machinery, but health and safety must be considered in all working environments. Unfortunately, office health and safety is often overlooked, as the hazards may not be life and death, but preventing them is as essential as any other workplace setting.
That is why, in today’s blog, we’re looking into the importance of health and safety within an office environment. We will be running through hazards that can occur in an office and what you can do to prevent them. Don’t forget, Armadillo Safety are health and safety consultants east sussex and other locations who provide health and safety training in London, Kent, Essex, and East Sussex, so if your office is nearby, we can help you out.
Slips, Trips, and Falls
Falls result from a slip – a lack of friction between the floor and someone’s feet – or a trip – someone’s feet come into contact with an object. Although this may seem minor, slips, trips, and falls are the most common cause of major injury in workplaces in the UK.
To avoid somebody falling, you should be aware of potential hazards that could cause them to slip or trip. For example, properly cleaning up spills on the floor, highlighting the area with a wet floor sign, and ensuring that employees don’t leave objects lying around the office, such as electrical wires or bags and belongings.
Manual handling is a less common workplace activity in an office; however, it is often overlooked as a risk and forgotten about. Transporting supplies around the office, moving computers and organising deliveries all fall into this category. Where possible, staff should avoid manual handling; however, the proper precautions must be in place if it must go ahead. These precautions could be ensuring everyone has the appropriate training before lifting or carrying anything, splitting or reducing weight as much as possible, or providing employees with accurate information about the weight of an item.
If you’re unsure about what this means for your office or would like some further help understanding, we offer health and safety advice for small businesses here at Armadillo Safety. This service gives you access to a phone line during office hours and a basic health and safety policy document.
Health and Safety When Using a Computer
In an office environment, using a computer will no doubt be unavoidable, which is why ensuring your employees are doing so safely is crucial. Health and safety when using a computer could consist of:
- Having regular breaks away from the screen
- Sitting comfortably on a supported chair
- Ensuring the screen is clean and free from glare
- PAT testing all electrical equipment such as computers, printers, fans etc.
Additionally, this counts for a home office too. In which case, you’re responsible for your own safety. When working from home, make sure you have regular calls with colleagues if possible and continue to practice the health and safety steps above to prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), eye strain, and back problems.
