In 2015, a new set of regulations were introduced, known as the CDM Regulations 2015. These regulations are designed for managing health, safety and welfare on construction projects. CDM stands for Construction (Design and Management) and these regulations describe the law that applies to all construction processes on construction projects from concept to completion, including what each duty holder must do to comply with the law to ensure all jobs are carried out in a health and safety conscious way.
If you are a building owner or managing agent having maintenance or other building work carried out, you have a legal duty under the CDM Regulations (2015). The regulations ensure no one is harmed during the work, and that your building is safe for use. If you don’t have a member of staff qualified to assess your building or needs further training, you can bring in a CDM consultant. Here’s why CDM consultancy is important.
What is CDM Consultancy?
A CDM consultant (or advisor) is a construction health and safety professional who can provide advice and guidance to duty holders in accordance with the CDM Regulations (2015), ensuring that health and safety is taken into account throughout the project.
The principal contractor on the project may not have the time or knowledge to comply with CDM Regulations (2015) and would therefore be better placed to bring in a professional to adhere to these legal requirements. The CMD consultant ensures that the project stays complaint and undertakes all the necessary paperwork, as well as monitoring all the arrangements taking place throughout the project.
You will need to make a judgement as to whether you can carry out all of your duties under CDM Regulations (2015). If what is required of your project goes beyond your capabilities, qualifications or experience, then a CDM consultant is necessary to advise and assist on the project to ensure your project is adhering to regulations.
What is Included in a CDM Consultancy?
When you bring in a CDM consultant, you benefit from their expert knowledge of eliminating and reducing hazards and managing any remaining risks. Your consultant will visit your site to carry out inspection and ensure that you are adhering to appropriate health and safety legislation.
A CDM consultant will work with your team to advise on all health and safety issues that may arise throughout the entire project, making revisions as necessary. Depending on the consultant you hire, you may also receive additional benefits such as risk assessment templates and SSIP assistance.
